Can We Compare Photography to Writing?

How are the skills of photography and writing similar?

I was asked recently how I can toggle back and forth between writing and street photography often blending the two within one prompt.  I hadn’t put much thought into the how or why of this blend so I sought out some wisdom from one of my favorite authors who said…..

“Good writing is about being conscious of the world and the people around you.  To write well, you need to soften and wake up to these things.  Good writing is about being respectful, compassionate and open-minded to what you see.”  Anne Lamott.

I think the one could say the same of good photography.  It’s NEVER about the gear and often never about the technique until one desires to produce inspiring photography.  Behind the gear and techniques (and just take a look at the greats to notice it.). You can detect awareness, discernment, respect and compassion.  At least…..in my opinion of what is great.  There are always differing opinions, but I strive for more of those “soft” attributes.  Making photographs from the heart as well as the brai
